Epicyclic Gearbox,also known as planetary gearbox, is a mechanical transmission device designed based on the principle of planetary gear system transmission. Its core feature is that gears rotate around their own axis (self rotation) and another fixed axis (revolution), achieving power transmission, speed regulation, and torque conversion through this "composite motion". It is essentially a different term for the same type of device as the "Planetary Gearbox". "Epicyclic" emphasizes the rotational motion characteristics of gears, while "Planetary" is a visual analogy to the motion of planets around stars. The two are completely identical in structure and principle.
Epicyclic and Planetary are often interchangeable in the engineering field, but "Epicyclic" is more commonly used in academic literature, while "Planetary" is more commonly used in industrial applications. Both are composed of Sun Gear, Planet Gears, Ring Gear, and Carrier, which achieve variable speed by fixing or driving different components.
