What is RV Torque Arm Reducer?

An RV torque arm reducer is a shaft-mounted cycloidal-planetary reduction unit that uses an external torque arm (reaction arm) to resist the reaction torque generated during operation, rather than relying on a rigid foot or flange mount. This configuration allows the reducer to be mounted directly on the driven shaft while the torque arm anchors to a fixed structural point, absorbing rotational reaction forces and preventing the reducer housing from spinning with the load.

Structure

Internally, the unit follows standard RV construction-an involute planetary input stage drives eccentric shafts that rotate cycloidal discs against fixed ring gear pins, producing smooth, high-ratio, near-zero-backlash output rotation. Externally, the housing incorporates a hollow output bore that mounts directly onto the driven shaft, secured with a shrink disc or keyed connection, while a rigid arm extends from the housing to a mounting bracket or structural anchor point, absorbing reaction torque without requiring a separate support bearing.

Selection Considerations

Key factors include reduction ratio, torque arm length and mounting geometry (affecting reaction force magnitude), permissible radial/axial shaft loads, backlash class, rated/peak torque, and hollow bore diameter compatibility with the driven shaft. Torque arm rigidity and anchor point strength must be verified to handle peak reaction loads without deflection or fatigue.

Applications

RV torque arm reducers are used in conveyor drives, material handling systems, mixers, and industrial machinery where shaft-mounted, space-saving installation is preferred over foot or flange mounting, particularly in applications with limited structural mounting options.

Installation Considerations

The hollow shaft connection must be properly torqued (shrink disc or keyway secured) to prevent slippage. The torque arm must be mounted with slight flexibility (rubber bushings) to accommodate minor misalignment while preventing housing rotation. Installers should verify anchor point strength, confirm shaft alignment, and check lubrication and backlash before commissioning.
