Portal Truss, also known as  truss system, is a portal load-bearing structure composed of upper chord members, lower chord members, web members, and supports. With the stable form of the portal frame due to the triangular element combination of truss characteristics, Portal Truss has become a core component in construction engineering that combines span adaptability and bearing capacity, and is widely used in large-span column free space scenes.Portal Truss plays a key supporting role in industrial plants, warehouses, sports venues and other buildings by transmitting loads through the axis of the rod.

The structural design of Portal Truss is both scientific and practical. The core consists of two parts: vertical columns (gate legs) on both sides and transverse truss beams on the top. slant support or horizontal bracing will be added to some complex structures to enhance stability. Members are often welded or bolted using steel sections (such as I-beams, angle steels, and steel pipes), and stress is dispersed through triangular truss units, allowing the entire structure to only withstand axial tension or pressure, greatly reducing bending deformation and improving material utilization. According to span requirements, it can be divided into single span, double span, and multi span forms. The roof can be designed as a parallel chord, triangle, or trapezoid to adapt to different building functions and drainage needs.

Compared to traditional rigid frame structures, Portal Truss has significant advantages. it has strong span capability. By optimizing the arrangement of members, it is possible to achieve a large-span design of over 30 meters without the need for intermediate columns, effectively expanding the internal usage space. due to its light weight and high load-bearing efficiency, the truss structure reduces the amount of materials used and is 30% -50% lighter than the same span rigid frame, thereby reducing the cost of foundation construction. it has excellent stability and the geometric invariance of triangular elements. With the support system, it can withstand wind loads, seismic loads, and roof live loads (such as snow and ash accumulation). In addition, the construction is convenient, and the members can be prefabricated in the factory and assembled on site, shortening the construction period. The maintenance cost in the later stage is low, and it is suitable for complex working conditions such as high temperature and high wind.

The application scenarios of Portal Truss cover multiple fields. In the industrial field, it is the mainstream load-bearing structure of factories such as steel plants and mechanical processing plants, meeting the space requirements for the installation and production operations of large equipment; In the warehousing and logistics industry, it is used for large warehouses and logistics centers to ensure open space for goods stacking and transportation. In public buildings, the grandstand ceilings of sports venues and the exhibition hall skeletons of convention centers often use gantry trusses to balance span requirements and architectural aesthetics; The rain shelters at toll stations and the roofs of bridge approaches in the transportation sector often use lightweight gantry trusses, which are suitable for complex outdoor environments. In the field of agriculture, the skeleton of large-scale greenhouses often uses small Portal Truss to balance load-bearing and light transmission needs.

With the development of building technology, Portal Truss continues to iterate and optimize, resulting in lightweight types such as steel pipe trusses and aluminum alloy trusses. Some use prestressing technology to further improve span and bearing capacity, while combining BIM technology to achieve precise design and construction, becoming an efficient and economical large-span load-bearing solution in modern buildings.
