What is Hollow Rotary Turntable?
A hollow rotary turntable is a precision rotary positioning platform with a central through-bore, designed to provide continuous or indexed 360° rotation for workpieces, fixtures, or equipment while allowing cables, pneumatic lines, or utility connections to pass directly through the axis of rotation. This eliminates the need for external slip rings or rotary unions in many applications, simplifying integration and reducing wear from cable flexing.
Structure
The turntable integrates a reduction drive-typically worm gear, planetary, cycloidal, or direct-drive torque motor-beneath a rigid worktable surface, supported by cross-roller, four-point contact, or slewing bearings capable of handling radial, axial, and moment loads. The central bore runs concentrically through the drive mechanism and table, enabling pass-through routing of wiring, vacuum lines, or fixture hardware. Encoders provide closed-loop feedback for precise angular positioning in indexed applications.
Selection Considerations
Key factors include bore diameter, table load capacity (radial, axial, moment), positioning accuracy and repeatability, rotational speed range, indexing vs. continuous rotation requirements, backlash, and torque capacity. Applications with heavy or offset loads should verify moment load rating carefully, since eccentric loading significantly affects bearing life and positioning accuracy.
Applications
Hollow rotary turntables are used in robotic work cells, display and exhibition systems, automated inspection stations, packaging and assembly lines, and camera/sensor positioning systems where 360° rotation combined with clean cable pass-through is needed.
Installation Considerations
The turntable must be mounted on a flat, rigid, and properly leveled base to ensure accurate rotation and prevent bearing preload distortion. Cables routed through the bore should be secured with strain relief to prevent chafing during rotation. Installers should verify load capacity against actual workpiece weight, confirm backlash and repeatability meet specification, and check lubrication before commissioning.
